THE PROVISOS OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION VICTORY AND THE UNIMPORTANCE OF THE SOUTH-EAST/ SOUTH-SOUTH: A SUPER GRANTING OF BIAFRAN BREAKAWAY - Written by KEMKA S. IBEJI

Yes, in the months behind us today, I engaged political parties and the electorate in a bid to deepen democracy and better the lots of our people in Ahiazu/Ezinihitte Mbaise Federal constituency, Mbaise nation, Igboland, Nigeria and Africa by extension.

Yes, I did! I pursued this dream angling to be a legislator knowing how important the legislature is in a democracy. I also did because I know that Nigeria, and to a greater extent Africa, have no home specific laws. By "home specific laws", I mean that species of norms guiding a society drawn from predominant ancestral and domestic experience. This brings up a challenge I was coming to win in the Federal House of Representatives as a lawmaker; raising laws of our dear nation and Africa on the experiential droppings of our African philosophy.

KEMKA S. IBEJI
Philosophy in this purview should mean tradition and culture. In other words, a people's total way of life. In this regard, laws of any nation in this age should be striving to synthesize the prayers of specific local existential episteme and the world spread yardstick of globalization. This will simply mean that if any nation must have its voice and fabrics alive in a globalizing world, it must maintain a new life of its ancestral uniqueness in such a manner as not to lose existence in the becoming of contemporary postmodernism - globalization.
The challenge therefore is to elevate traditional value systems of Nigeria and Africa upon the need for reasonable relevance in the committee of global values. This was the fulcrum of my rising to be elected. The second follows.

Another intent of my clamouring to serve through lawmaking is to procure equality for all the geopolitical zones that make up Nigeria.

It will be easy to state that Nigeria is subdivided into Six (6) Geopolitical Zones viz; South-East, South-South, South-West,  North-East, North-West and North-Central. But one pertinent question should be how these constituent zones are made to function as bonding units of the federation. One could easily answer this question by reaching out to the election of the National leadership of Nigeria especially the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The conditions for electing the president of Nigeria are; 1. Simple majority and 2. Having 25% of 24 out of 36 states and FCT of Nigeria. According to the constitution, a presidential candidate must have nothing less than 25 percent of votes cast in at least two-thirds or 24 states of the federation. The candidate should also have majority votes in the election.

A little analysis gives us the truth that the South-East has Five (5) states while the South-South is Six (6) states. This summarizes the states in both South-East and South-South geopolitical zones as Eleven (11). This invariably means that a president can emerge in Nigeria without these zones. From here, one can see from its setting out that the electoral law in particular and the law of Nigeria in general aids sectionalistic sentiments and empowers nepotism, insignificant reductionism and illicit abandonment.

Winning all your votes from the Northern part of Nigeria and having a two-third from the South-West gives you the victory and mandate to rule over the entire nation covering and including the South-East and South-South. This is pure insanity weaved into law and is deserving immediate attention in the form and class of emergency.

Nigeria went to war against the Igbos during the 30 months Biafran war (the Civil War) and has failed to clean up and obliterate the vestiges of that bloodletting and murder of a section of itself. It also seems that the craftsmen of our national constitution have either inadequate knowledge of the importance of equality in national unity or they are mischievous with some smiles. In any case, I saw it as a very important need on our people of Ahiazu/Ezinihitte Mbaise Federal constituency to send someone sincerely knowledgeable about lots of our needs as this so as to salvage the situation. It was to me a mission to a service that only a real philosopher (not a philosophy graduate) could perform. This is so as the demands of the mission is tasking on the innate and experiential knowledge of the messenger.

In this regard, my view is to make sure that the South-East and the entire geopolitical zones drink from the eternal and ennobling fountains of egalitarianism. The tributaries from this thirst quench would be a society where equality and justice are the mainstay of national creed. By this, we should have our Electoral Act reviewed in such a way that all the Six geopolitical zones of Nigeria will have equal rights and privileges in choosing their president and national leadership. In this sense I will submit that the constitution should thereafter read the conditions of electing the president as; 1. Polling the highest votes cast and 2. Having 25% of votes cast in all the Six geopolitical zones of the country. In this way all the geopolitical segments of the country will be seen as equally very important.

From the foregoing, it is pertinent to appropriate and infer that the current conditionalities for electing the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in accordance with the subsisting letters of the Electoral Act of Nigeria grants logical validity to the quest for Biafran breakaway. This is so because the South-East and South-South are rendered unimportant and removed from identity in the national scheme with regard to the electoral law of the moment.

To therefore make sure that Nigeria remains a country with all its constituent secretions intact, it has become sufficiently necessary for all the geopolitical zones to be equal in both essence and substance. This will in summary ensure peace, trust and belief in the Nigerian nation by the citizens across all sections. It will also necessitate a formation of strong and virile national identity upon which national lifestyle will be formulated, measured and treasured.
