THE NEW TAX LAW AND ITS EXECUTION FROM JANUARY 2026 AS PROPOSED; THE CONDITIONS FOR FAITHFULNESS AND SUPPORT BY THE NIGERIAN CITIZENS. Written by KEMKA S. IBEJI

As the government of the APC led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gears up for the new tax law which is presumed to be effective from January 2026, it has become very important that we all look inwards to find out how best to ensure that all citizens are in support of the government, at least, to chart the course of our national prosperity.

As we read and hear from the government circles, the government means well for the country and is working hard to ensure that everything gets better for all the citizens in the nearest future. This is why measures are put in place to make sure that sacrifices are made now for tomorrow to be better for all of us including the generations ahead. This is commendable and should be supported by all.

It, however, is paramount to establish guides that will help all aspects of the society work together to make sure that the good intentions of the government is supported, sustained and brought to life. For this reason, the following shall be put on the table for our collective consideration.

Let's therefore make an agreement with this government and work towards the Nigeria of our dream. For a long time it's been a one sided story where the government issues declarations and the citizens only align or are made to just obey. In that manner, the citizens sacrifice while the government and its functionaries live large. This narrative has made things difficult for the government and the people respectively.

The only problem that exists between the government at all levels and at all times and the people it governs is trust and betrayal. If the people can trust the government and be certain that the government won't betray them, they will do everything to support the government.

So what is the problem?

Now we Nigerians want to make a deal with the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his Tax law set to be put into force by 2026. We are once again ready for the sacrifices to make Nigeria great and greater. But this time it must be a sacrifice across the board. Nobody should be out of it. Both the government and the people, the rulers and the ruled, the governor and the governed, everyone must be part of this. This infers that this intended accord shall be beyond the theoretical social contract. This has to be experienced by all the citizens in a way that it is no longer going to be a conjecture.

So we Nigerians are ready for a new social contract with the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This contract should be enforceable, by the way. This is to lay a solid foundation of trust and hope for all hands to be on deck to lift Nigeria up.

What is this New Social Contract?

Nigerians are ready to accept the tax law and to contribute fully to revenue mobilization of the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu if and only if there is a law or act passed by the parliament which stipulates that the resources must be safe. The condition for the safety of the resources must be strong enough to command the obedience of all. So the government is requested to give a strong and justiceable guarantee to the citizens at this instance to procure our trust.

So the National Assembly should enact an act signed by the President that going forward, any act of embezzlement of public funds by any public servant or government functionary and any member of government must be seen and treated as CAPITAL OFFENCE. So for any and every act of embezzlement of public funds, the offence shall be punished with death sentence and public execution. So for any capital offence as corruption of embezzlement of public funds by any citizen, it shall receive capital punishment as a responsibility.

If the government accepts this condition and puts it into our statute, we all as Nigerians shall gladly and wholeheartedly support and abide by the NEW TAX LAW. But if the government shirks from this solemn contract, it makes herself a suspect and encourages the citizens to evade the tax regime and its stipulates.

To this end, we invite the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to consider and heed this proposal so as to make our country a greater nation for us all.
