ROCHAS' GOVERNMENT HOUSE, OWERRI: A TALE OF GLITTERING EXTERIORS AND STINKY INTERIORS
By Ogu Bundu Nwadike, M.A
The English say, "Clear conscience fears no accusations". But guilt always has a way of exposing its victims. Yet, as they say, "He who is on the ground fears no fall". But while the insane person never feels shame, his kith and kin are flabbergasted and overwhelmed by shame. The evil that men do, lives both with them and after them. There is no peace for the wicked!
The ex-governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, may have gone away from his office in Douglas House, but the evidence of physical dirt, decay and stench he left behind at Government House, Owerri declare him guilty as charged. All his crass display of opulence, affluence and flamboyance were punctured by the first visit of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, CON, KSC who, on Friday May 31, 2019, inspected the exterior and interior areas of Government House, Owerri. The trending photoshots of the interiors of the seat of power in Imo State are simply screaming loud and clear, "Rochas is dirty"!
Now, I agree that truly all that glitters are not gold. Many people and things that are clean on the outside are rather very dirty inside. Such hypocrisy is frowned upon by the Holy Bible. With what I saw as the image and likeness of the inners of the supposedly beautiful outers of the awe-inspiring Douglas House, I see the sense in the expression, "Not as you think"!
The location of the Government House, Owerri, a.k.a Douglas House, is neighbour to such imposing public places as "Rockview Hotel, Owerri", "Victory Chapel, Government House, Owerri", "the Command Headquarters, Imo State Police Command, Owerri" and the like. Except for God using the scheduled official visit of the new governor to show the world how the dirty inners of Douglas House in care of Rochas countered and contradicted what was seen outside, nobody that is not a staff of the offices will ever believe things were that bad and dirty with Rochas in Government House.
But for the fact that I am involved, I would have been in dilemma of double-thought as to whether the photographs weren't product of photoshop designed to disparage the embattled ex-governor. But they are not photoshopped. They're the true condition of Douglas House on Friday, May 31, 2019 when Gov. Ihedioha paid an inspection visit of the place.

I feel it's situation as the exposé by the visit of Gov. Ihedioha that caused the poor, unbefitting attitude of the ex-governor in relating with the current governor. It's on record that while, despite all electrocuting altercations before, during and after the 2011 elections that made Rochas governor, his predecessor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, formally handed over the notes and paraphernalia of office to Rochas at the appointed time.
However, unfortunately, the same Rochas eloped and bolted a day or so before the day of inauguaration of Ihedioha without handing over any notes or paraphernalia of office to him. Till date Rochas is nowhere to be found! Now, I know better that the shame of taking his successor-in-office to see what one Mr. Emeka Duru, a Principal Secretary in the Rochas regime showed Gov. Ihedioha, must have debarred and driven the self-effacing Rochas away from Douglas House the way he behaved.
I wonder whether Rochas is still: "Hero the Hero", "The last man standing", "The defending champion" that his stooges shamelessly and errorneously chose to describe and address the dirty man. No doubt, like those distant from him, the sycophants that sang songs of praise to Rochas never had an inkling about how stinky the insides of Douglas House where Rochas literally lived in for eight years was. It's really most appalling and unfortunate!
My purpose in this short essay was to air my views about the sordid, sight-destroying vistas of the Douglas House nay Government House that ex-governor Rochas Okorocha superintended over for so long. I have achieved that purpose. I now take my bow out until soon again. Thank you.
