INGRATITUDE OF NIGERIA AND NIGERIANS TO FORMER PRESIDENT OLUSEGUN OBASANJO!
Most times people suffer in their amazement with confusion as to why they suffer. When you suffer and feel astonished as to the reason for your suffering, please look once again in your direction first.
Ingratitude is one curse that hangs on for a lasting time. But gratitude is a blessing, is cheering and is fulfilling. Gratitude is a virtue and it enlarges whoever that abides by it.
Since ingratitude is a burden, I think Nigeria and Nigerians are under serious burden at the moment from their ingratitude to Former President Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo.
In 1999, Nigeria was panting heavily on the weight of the international debt on the country which amounted to over $30 billion. Obasanjo paid off the Nigerian debt of such excruciating weight and got us freedom from debt.
Obasanjo went ahead and saved up for Nigeria the sum of $60 Billion which allowed Nigeria the opportunity to grow her economy in various aspects.
Obasanjo got us mechanism for anti-corruption. He knew there was and still remains a need to have a systemic approach to fighting corruption in Nigeria. He got us off the hook of the government criminals and criminality without much panic on the innocent people of Nigeria.
Obasanjo gave us banks. Out of about 98 banks in Nigeria by 1999, nothing could be useful to the growth of our economy. An analysis then held that the 98 banks put together were not worth the 4th bank in South Africa. Obasanjo gave us 25 solid banks and our first export from the economy. At such time and in very quick economic growth, our bank became Multinationals and we gave to the world from Nigeria and the voice of an African nation was heard in economic globalization.
From the banks came out insurance. The insurance companies started breathing and life was gradually returning to that sector.
We got telecommunication under President Obasanjo's administration. It was like a dream of joy at some point in Nigeria to imagine a market woman or an Okada man holding phone. Honestly you will not want to wake up from such good dream. Olusegun Obasanjo made such fabulous dream a reality in Nigeria.
Our agriculture knew a difference. I could remember some years before Obasanjo's administration that for a little party or occasion in Lagos, you will need to travel to Cotonou in Benin Republic to buy a carton of frozen chicken or turkey. When Obasanjo came in as the President he revamped the agricultural sector of the economy such that when he banned the importation of frozen food into Nigeria, nobody felt it negatively. We had food security, robust agriculture, availability of food, Agro entrepreneurship and much more.
The economy got fine and healthy with Obasanjo as the President. The Civil servants built houses of their own and bought cars genuinely without being fraudulent.
President Olusegun Obasanjo also gave us the best succession in the person of President Umar Musa Yar'adua. Unfortunately, Yar'adua died and we missed the great fruits that would have come from him.
Obasanjo's mistakes started with his support for President Goodluck Jonathan, GEJ's ouster and his support for President Muhammadu Buhari. But which human is blamed for another man's failure?
I give it to former President Olusegun Obasanjo aka OBJ, Baba Iyabo, Baba Sege as the best President of Nigeria so far. I therefore state that President Obasanjo deserves gratitude from Nigeria and Nigerians and not the present ingratitude.
