THE NEW GOVERNMENT WILL BE A TECHNOCRACY Written by KEMKA S. IBEJI


We're set to have a sane government in 2027 with the Nigeria Democratic Congress team led by Mr. Peter Obi and Engr. Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Through the Vice Presidential candidate, the team has announced that political appointments in their government, to be formed from next year 2027, will not be informed by or coloured with political determinations and stiff stay but by competence and the wishes/demands of the citizens. 

So for the first time after former President Olusegun Obasanjo, there is going to be a term of government appointees intensely populated by professionals and not incompetent politicians who know nothing except thuggery and nuisance. 

The professionals brought in by President Obasanjo have either run back, overused, rendered valueless by politics, died or otherwise. Examples are Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Dora Akunyili, Ndii Okereke Onyiuke, Prof. Bath Nnaji, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Nuhu Ribadu, Obiageli Oby Ezekwesili, Bode Agusto, Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru, Funso Kupolokun, Ernest Ndukwe, Ahmed Joda, Rilwanu Lukman, Magnus Kpakol, Ode Ojowu, Christopher Kolade, Steve Oronsaye, Bamidele Dada, Prof. Eyitayo Lambo, Prof. Fabian Osuji, Prof. Turner Isoun, Gen. Joseph Garba (rtd.), Philip Asiodu and many others. 

One won't forget the engagement of the services of other international class experts like Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, Justice Kutigi, Rev. Fr. Kuka, now Bishop Kuka, and many others too numerous to mention. 

The impact of the above professionals have remained indelible on the sands of Nigeria. From the economy to the justice system, to the anti-corruption fronts, to social welfare, to the security of lives and property, to the oil and gas, to diplomacy and international politics, and to various other aspects of the Nigerian experience. 

Some of the benefits of getting the professionals and technocrats are being enjoyed till this moment in Nigeria. Through them Nigeria got debt relief which was brought by a very rising good image of the country with the sincerity of the experts. We remember that it was through the employment and appointment of the technocratic team that we got our banks in Nigeria to become the first Nigerian multinationals. Nigerian banks were classed with top banks in the world. 

From the banks the government was able to move to insurance, and real estate where banks gave huge credence to economic activities in the value chain and the national wealth base expanded into the lower class. Teachers and other civil and public servants began to live well as humans that can afford cars and other basic necessities of life. 

Who would have dreamt of holding a cell phone today in Nigeria except for Obasanjo's efficacious involvement of experts and professionals in the Nigerian government of his time? We only heard that even in other smaller African countries then, holding phones was not any big deal but in Nigeria it was a bogus dream. Some of us who were students from rich homes could only own NITEL cards and could visit phone booths or centres then to make calls. We even did that with pride not knowing that we merely were brandishing paucity in governance. Telecommunications were given a rebirth in Nigeria and the children of the poor can communicate now; thanks to President Olusegun Obasanjo's thoughtful engagement of professionals in his government. 

Have we not forgotten about Nigeria SAT 1 and SAT 2 that were exclusively executed by Nigerian Engineers and experts? Nigeria went into space for the first time in our national history through the creative government of President Obasanjo that employed technocrats and professionals. 

Though the refineries weren't functioning optimally, they were running though supported heavily by importation. Nevertheless, we enjoyed subsidy where the government paid for the citizens to enjoy the blessings of God to Nigeria in natural resources. Obasanjo could manage the subsidy with little or no visible scandal which enabled the Nigerian citizens to enjoy the benefits. He sought to privatise the refineries in the twilight of his administration but was strongly resisted when he lost the trust of the masses to his 3rd term bid. Now we wish he continued instead of the experiences after him. 

Every sector of the government was functioning. And we again remember the expertise employed by President Obasanjo in his information ministry. Figure out Hon. Chukwuemeka Chikelue and his team. Cast your mind back to his National Orientation Agency, think about the Nigerian Content, remember SERVICOM, NAFDAC, EFCC, ICPC, NDLEA, etc. 

The foregoing are the resounding benefits that are advanced and provided by a TECHNOCRACY. This is exactly the dream and promise we need to applaud and support. If there is no other reason to support Obi/Kwankwaso Presidential Ticket, this is enough. 

Nigeria, more than ever, needs a government mounted on all significant fronts by experts, professionals and technocrats. This is what Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are promising Nigerians from May 29, 2027. Please, what else can be better?

It beats good understanding how most Nigerians think. So humans who are mostly believed to be normal are supporting Wike and blaming Fubara for being ungrateful? Ungrateful for what please?  Ungrateful for wanting some space to govern and live as a human? Will Wike be responsible for whatever happens in his (Fubara's) regime as a governor in history? Will any of the people criticizing Fubara ever be happy to live as they tend to be prescribing for the man? Again some others are saying that president Tinubu saved him the first time and I ask how? Tinubu spoiled his matter which was legitimate. The legislators were already out by law and Tinubu saved them in an unlawful manner using the state of emergency.  There wasn't any division in the PDP when the lawmakers defected and by that they legally lost their seats in the legislative house.
