DR. OGBONNAYA ONU’S HISTORY: AN APC OBJECTIVE APPRAISAL


It is innate in man and in human culture to yearn nostalgically for the retrospective golden character. But as is evident in human experience everywhere, paradisiacal past is a golden treasure that stand the test of time. There is also always a need for a hero in every culture, society, party, e.t.c. one who epitomizes the ideals the culture ever held.

No wonder Mr. president, Muhamadu Buhari reported by daily sun of Wednesday April, 29th 2015 during a congratulatory visit by Igbo delegates Assembly (IDA), he said that “Dr. Onu is an accomplished politician and administrator, a gentle man who has overtime proved to be a dedicated patriot in words and deeds, one who devoted his energy for the unity, progress and development of the nation. Also that “Dr. Onu is a true leader who has used his wisdom and knowledge to champion the cause of his people”. Again on the same note, President Buhari in his forward to Dr. Onu’s book: From Opposition to Governing Party Nigeria’s APC merger story. Buhari said that “Dr. Onu is a good and consistent leader, a man of honour whose style of politics does not include moving from one party to the other, that he (Dr. Onu) conceived and formed APC party”. 

Dr. Onu is a pragmatic patriot who practices what he preaches. In 1999, he demonstrated uncommon patriotism when harkened to the popular quest for power shift to the South-west and to ensure that power transit from military to civilian leadership by dropping his APP Presidential ticket for Olu Falea of AD and going ahead to join forces with others to work for the success of the then APP/AD Presidential candidate, reason he said, is that “no sacrifice made was too much for national unity and progress of Nigeria”.

Dr. Onu is a man that loved and admired the great potential of the diversity of the nation Nigeria.

As a governor, he made a strong case for the promotion of ensuring peace and mutual co-existence between communities in Nigeria that share common border with sister African countries to an extent of playing a major role for the creation and establishment of Border Communities Development Agency by the federal government as a peace builder. 

Dr. Onu’s performances in STI ministry in the past seven years call for his assessment into the number one seat of Nigeria. Dr. Onu’s dream of moving the country from consumer based economy to productive based economy through STI knowledge based should propel for a call for service. A detribalized Nigerian with no atom of corruption.

Therefore, APC as a party driven by a time honoured principle should go for Dr. Onu who has shown a high value and quality leadership charisma to lead this country Nigeria. The APC party led by president Buhari is believed as an entity who are conscious of history as a golden treasure should anchor their choice of party presidential flag bearer evaluation on Dr. Onu’s past historical antecedents, treasure which the party is enjoying today.

With all these past golden treasures built by Dr. Onu, President Muhamadu Buhari yesterday Tuesday 31st 2022, said that it is imperative that Governors should support him to endorse someone who has character, who is acceptable across the country and who has the capacity to win the election in 2023. These descriptions find Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu worthy. 

On the APC convention coming up on 6th to 8th June, 2022 it is expected that the party should not miss the opportunity of having Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu on the ballot for the APC as he is one who will give the masses hope and sense of victory come 2023.
