THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA AFTER PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI (1). Written by KEMKA S. IBEJI
It is important to begin this message with a measure of meekness and humility to the adequacy of historicity and the ontology of time. This is to state that every leader is unique and an appointee of his or her. To this reality we thank God for His gift of President Muhammadu Buhari at his time and age.
I do not say the foregoing as a praise singer or a hagiographer but as describe of time and chance in accordance with the truism of human existence and the facticity of our political milieu in history. He was elected by Nigerians in his time and he has done his best according to his power, posture, position and capacity. We owe him thanks and our prayers for his services to our country Nigeria.
The time has come for exchange of baton and the processes have begun. It is a fact that in this, the people are saddled with the responsibility of making choice for the next President of Nigeria in 2023. However, the leaders and kingmakers also have the primal duty to present the alternatives to the people.
The questions therefore should be;
What type of leader do Nigerians want in 2023 and beyond?
What type of president do Nigerians deserve in 2023?
In answering the questions above, we must begin to investigate the characters that have rendered themselves for our choice.
Before we make this all important choice, there are certain things we need to bring to light to guide us in our choice making. A particularly important one should be the Nigerian situation and predicaments of the moment.
Our country is sitting on the tip of insecurities. The cost of living has gone too high while inflation bites hard. Our education has gone down in quality and the students have been at home for a while now. We have been consuming more than we produce such that we can be eligibly tagged a consumption economy. Our balance of trade is horrible and our exchange rate is a nightmare. Our crude oil and other mineral resources that are supposed to be blessings to us are unfortunately near curse. The wrong things have taken centre stage and the judiciary has gone down and justice is now a wonder.
With the above realities and much more unmentioned experiences, we can rehearse the questions; who do Nigerians want, deserve and desire as their next President in 2023?
