DR. OGBONNAYA ONU'S 22 LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENTS AS ABIA STATE GOVERNOR IN JUST 18 MONTHS. Written by KEMKA S. IBEJI
The outline of a few of the many achievements of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu as the Governor of Old Abia State in a short stay of just 18 months;
1. Michael Okpara Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike;
2. Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu; retained the Abia State University, Uturu;
3. Abia State Polytechnic, Aba;
4. College of Technical Education, Arochukwu;
5. Built the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia;
6. Tower of Peace, Umuahia;
7. Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State (BCA);
8. Abia State Television;
9. Ambassador Newspapers.
10. As a peace builder he played a major role in influencing the establishment of the Border Communities Development Agency by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
11. He promoted national unity by abolishing the State of Origin Syndrome.
12. He appointed several non-indigenes of the State into key positions of responsibility in his Administration.
13. He pursued policies that helped make people from other States, feel at home and be welcome in Abia State.
14. He introduced free and qualitative maternal health care delivery system for pregnant Abia Women. This programme was so popular that women from neighbouring States benefited tremendously from it.
15. He promoted girl child education by giving scholarship to female science students, who got admission into tertiary institutions in Abia State.
16. He instituted the Abia State Merit Award, which was passed into law by the Abia State House of Assembly as the Abia State Merit Award Law. This law, enabled the State to reward Abians who made significant contributions to the State and the Nation.
17. He took steps that ended the perennial outbreak of fire in Ariaria Market in Aba. This was of great assistance to traders, who used to suffer huge losses during such fire outbreak in the past.
18. Through an effective management system, he recovered all abandoned public-owned palm oil plantations in many parts of the State. He put them to use, for the common good.
19. He took over the sanitation of Umuahia town and ensured that Umuahia, the State Capital, was clean.
20. He prepared for the introduction of computers into selected primary and secondary schools in the State, even before the United States of America introduced computers into their public schools, to help prepare young Abians for effective participation in information technology, as well as help both job and wealth creation.
21. To make Abia State the technology hub of Nigeria he established a Technology Village in the State. This was aimed at encouraging technology acquisition for job creation as well as wealth creation to build a strong, inclusive, and diversified economy in the State, that is knowledge based and innovation driven.
22. He allocated land to others, but did not give any to either himself or any member of his family.
These were achieved in just 18 months as Governor as early as 1991. They are even advanced projects compared to the type of projects done by current governors. He is a man with foresight. He is creative. He is innovative. He will turn Nigeria into a wonder to the shock of all.
