GEOPOLITICAL ZONES IN NIGERIA AND POWER ANALYSIS TOWARDS 2023 GENERAL ELECTIONS

The following are the outline of the leadership of Nigeria in terms of the presidency since the independence in 1960 - 2023;


A. NORTH WEST 

1. Maj. Gen. Murtala Muhammed 1975 (0.75 year)

2. Alhaji Shehu Shagari 1979 - 1983 (4 years)

3. Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari 1983 - 1985 (2 years)

4. Gen. Sani Abacha 1993 - 1998 (5 years)

5. Alhaji Umar Musa Yaradua 2007 - 2009 (2 years)

6. President Muhammadu Buhari 2015 - 2023 (8 years)

NORTH WEST has ruled 6 times totalling 22 years or 34%


B. NORTH CENTRAL 

1. Gen. Yakubu Gowon 1966 - 1975 (9 years)

2. Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida 1985 - 1993 (8 years)

3. Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar 1998 - 1999 (0.75 year)

NORTH CENTRAL has ruled 3 times totalling 18 years or 28%


C. SOUTH WEST 

1. Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo 1975 - 1979 (4 years)

2. Chief Ernest Shonekan 1993 (0.25 year)

3. President Olusegun Obasanjo 1999 - 2007 (8 years)

SOUTH WEST has ruled 3 times totalling 12 years or 19%


D. NORTH EAST 

1. Alhaji Tafawa Balewa = 1960 - 1966 (6 years)

NORTH EAST has ruled once totalling 6 years or 9%


E. SOUTH SOUTH 

A. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan 2009 - 2015 (6 years)

SOUTH SOUTH has ruled 1 time totalling 6 years or 9%


F. SOUTH EAST 

A. Maj. Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi Jan - Jun 1966 (0.5 year)

SOUTH EAST has ruled 1 time totalling 0.5 year or 1%


From the analysis above and on the average of 10.71 years per each of the 6 regions, NORTH WEST, NORTH CENTRAL and SOUTH WEST have had the largest time in power. SOUTH SOUTH and NORTH EAST have also had moderate time in power while the SOUTH EAST has been GROSSLY deprived and marginalised.

For equity, fairness and justice, the SOUTH EAST should be the ripe and right geopolitical zone just enough and adequately fair to present Nigeria with her next President in 2023.
