ON COVID-19 AND THE ARRIVAL OF THE CHINESE MEDICS: WE SHALL HOLD THIS GOVERNMENT RESPONSIBLE. Written by KEMKA S. IBEJI

Usually, before people start work, it is necessary for records purposes to remark and describe the job to be done by the people. This does not go without marking out where they are beginning from and where they are expected to reach.
It has become more reasonable to do this as many Nigerians are already showing disapproval of the coming of the Chinese medical team to Nigeria at this time. The Nigerian masses and the domestic medical industry believe that Nigeria has capacity to handle the situation in the country. For them, all that is needed is commitment, encouragement, motivation and patriotism by the government. So far, they have briefly exemplified their poise to do their best if assisted by the government as required. Since the index case of the Covid-19 in Nigeria over a month or two ago, the pandemic has been contained to the extent that the spread is not significant.
In about two months, the record has it that as this piece is being written, Nigeria has only 276 infected persons out of which 44 have been cured and discharged and only 6 deaths. But remarkably, 22 out of the 276 were infected only today that the Chinese Medics arrived.
The question that has bothered many Nigerians is; why the Chinese Medics? Who invited them and for what reason? Why these questions are vital is the obstinacy of the government to bring them even when the domestic medical professionals and the masses have vehemently objected to their coming. What interest does the government have?
Further on the questions are the Italian experience on this same pandemic. It was widespread news that the Italian case got worse when the Chinese Medics arrived Italy to help as they have just done to Nigeria. We pray it does not turn out the Italian way. However, this is to put the government of President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC on notice that Nigerians are watching and they will be held responsible for whatever outcome this Chinese arrival amounts to.
We however pray and wish for the best possible outcome hoping that in the next few weeks from today, Nigerians will get back to their businesses, work places and enjoy once again their normal life.
