MY COVID-19 EXPECTATION FOR/FROM IMO STATE. Written by KEMKA S. IBEJI

Imo State Covid-19 Task Force

For whatever reason, Imo State has not been shown to Nigeria and the world for what the state is. It is the Eastern Heartland, yes, but indeed it is. Many may still be wondering why I say so but be pleased that I, at least, know what I am saying.

Imo State is blessed with abundant human capital ranging from talented people from the academia, to industry, to craft, eloquence and wit. It is implanted in the history of Nigerian academics that at some point in Nigeria, Imo maintained over 50% of JAMB intakes and such other intellectual feats.

In the business world, Imo State may have not built many top-flight names but for every successful business in Nigeria, Imo State citizens had considerable number in the areas of ideas, organization and administration. And for those who rose briefly above the bar, they built their businesses into institutions. I may leave you with the name mentioning duty here.

Now on the issue that has caused tremor and reverberation on the planet earth (COVID-19 Pandemic), I had an expectation for and from Imo State. This expectation has lasted and almost getting rusty hence this tickling of the government.

As soon as the Governor HE Sen. Hope Uzodinma announced the Imo State Covid-19 Task Force and placed Professor Maurice Iwu as the Head of the team, I was warming up for some celebration with some loud hit on my chest in pride. I was getting ready to lift the trophy of record achievement for the government in honour of the entire Imo State.

Maybe it's important for you to know that the Chairman of the Task Force, Prof. Maurice Iwu, is a renowned Pharmacology scholar with specialty in pharmacognosy. He was awarded professorial chair in this regard; you won't doubt it that it is not a mean feat. It was in this same respect that when Ebola framed up to ravage global orbits, the name of Prof. Maurice Iwu was mentioned and it gave great hope. Again, while this Covid-19 was still within the borders of the People's Republic of China, Prof. Maurice Iwu's name came up. It was said that the United States has invited him for some defence on some of his proffered solution for the dreaded virus. We also heard that even in Massachusetts, his formula has or was undergoing some examination.

In this regard, once his name mention as the Chairman of the Imo State Covid-19 Task Force, I asserted that the governor has made an informed decision. I could add that it was a round peg in a round hole. My expectation therefore was that he will sway the government towards research and investing in the future of Ndị Imo and situating the state for world reckoning.

My thinking was that by now, we would have got clear from dusting and made ready for massive manufacturing of vaccine/drug for the prevention and treatment of Covid-19 pandemic respectively. What has happened please?

Though that hope is not denied life in my consciousness yet, my eyes have been on the road and struggling not to get tired of my expectation.

I, to this end, call on the Governor of Imo State HE Sen. Hope Uzodinma and his team to seize the opportunity of this pandemic and the abundance of professionals in the state to announce Imo State at the world stage for good. This is vital as it has more promise for him, his administration, and the citizenry of Imo State in the economy, state image, job and wealth creation, and more. It also will finely write their names in bold love for posterity.

May I, in the main, ask; "What is a man when he works the surface of this earth without engraving his/her name as signpost for those coming after, especially when the tools are firmly fixed in his fist by providence?"

I am,
