IMO: THE DEN OF DESPERATE POLITICIANS. By KEMKA S. IBEJI

The losses of desperation; Uche Nwosu (Rochas Okorocha) and Sen. Godwin Ararume.

Let me begin by reenacting the moral maxim that "anyone who has nothing to die for, has no reason to live".

The above is all about character. It is a virtue of inestimable value. This is strongly lacking in Nigerian political class and especially as seen in Imo State in the recent experience.

In the last general election of 2019, Imo State witnessed a large number of aspirants turnout. While many political analysts and commentators may wish to condemn that, I very sincerely commend it. My reason is that it shows a very growing level of political awareness, education, involvement and concern. This also implies that the number of citizenship is heightening in Imo State. One will recall that the cradle of the state system is the Greek political experience through City States and the polis. For the Greek political thinkers, to be a citizen is to be involved in the leadership of the land. It is for this reason that women (as at then), slaves and prisoners were not citizens since they could not participate in leadership through voting or being voted for.

Though this occurrence in Imo State is commendable by me, it has some disturbing aspects that we need to quickly yank off from our political culture - desperation. This has a lot to do with our value system which is endangered - morality. Of course, in the study of academic philosophy, politics or political philosophy is subsumed in the wider purview known as axiology. This has to do with values and value systems hence you find ethics as part of axiology sharing logical and scientific genre or classification with politics.

The above simply goes a long way to say that without morality, it will be unimaginable to have a good leadership and leader. But what has happened to Imo State?

When people do not have values or are not sound on moral existence, they get desperate. A desperate man or woman is a dangerous associate. And this always has a fat cost on the one who is desperate.

One could recall that at the wake of the 2019 election, the outgoing governor Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha was wearing desperation as proud garment on him. This was eminent as he vowed to enthrone his own son-in-law as his successor by all means. This desperation blinded him from seeing the right things to do. He no longer trusted those who have worked with him over the years. He started the war and was already fighting everyone at sight. He was against his own Deputy succeeded him. He was against any member of his government succeeding him. He was against any other person from anywhere in Imo State to be the governor of the state after him unless it is his son-in-law Uche Nwosu. When the fight got intense, even while having the ticket of his political party (the APC), he desperately jumped into Action Alliance (AA) and took a double. He was just desperate. This made them to finally lose the their candidacy at the Supreme Court after all the resources wasted.

Sen. Godwin Ararume became the leader of the coalition. He was a very strong man and he could stand Gov. Rochas Okorocha in resources, contacts and connections. He moved the coalition with some form of leadership that seemed out of this world. They had the support of the majority of the citizenry in the state. While this was going on, Sen. Ararume was carrying a baggage of desperation that hung with death weight on him. The sentiment robbed him his clear reasoning and he became uncertain of himself. He hurriedly ran into APGA and set that bride in disarray. With the help of the Anambra conscienceless duo of Willie Obiano and Victor Oye and in uncertain alliance with Victor Umeh, they humiliated APGA and her membership and played rough with her virginity.

While Ararume got the APGA ticket, he lost the election. Now the lose by his desperation is around the corner once more. As the governorship election has again got back to the Supreme Court with cries for justice, many possibilities have come to greet us;

1. Assuming it results to a runoff, the Supreme Court has already sacked both Uche Nwosu from the contest and rendered him ineligible to be on the ballot. This submits Ararume as the 1st runner up and therefore should go on the runoff against Gov. Emeka Ihedioha. But now see what desperation can do. Since unsure of anything out of desperation, Sen. Godwin Ararume is already on his way back to the APC. The rumours have it that he is already bidding to contest for the senate as it is ripe to fix the gap created by the death of Sen. Benjamin Uwajumogu. With all the news and information, Sen. Godwin Ararume has been accused of antipathy by his own APGA. This led to his sack or dismissal from the party. So assuming the Supreme Court rules that the election hit a runoff as Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha did not meet the required 25% of ⅔ spread of the state, who will he runoff with?

Remember that the Supreme Court has sentenced Uche Nwosu as a noncandidate. Also remember that APGA has sacked Sen. Godwin Ararume and so can not have him on the ballot and cannot replace him with another person. Recall, however, that by the Supreme Court judgment against Uche Nwosu where he was found as holding the nomination of both the APC and AA, the APC have lost a chance to present a candidate for the runoff as the law no longer sees Sen. Hope Uzodinma as the candidate of the party - the APC.

Only if Sen. Godwin Ararume was not desperate as well, he would be at the Supreme Court now fighting his case that was stood down while praying for a runoff. Desperation!

While I wield some honour and respect for Sen. Hope Uzodinma the reigning governor of that state at the moment, he ate fat also from the disease of desperation.

Gov. Hope Uzodinma in desperate move to ensure he wins the Imo State Governorship Election in 2019 by any means possible, he went writing the results of the 388 polling units in question. Who doesn't know that he wrote the results by himself? In fact, I read that in his cross examination at the courts, he acquiesced to the fact that he entered the results by himself in the company of his agents. And you must agree with me that even the Holy and most beautiful angels will behave like Gov. Hope Uzodinma if given the opportunity as he had to write the results himself in an election he is a contestant. Who wouldn't do that?

But the problem there is; is it the duty of Gov. Hope Uzodinma to do the job of INEC assuming they failed to do their job. Won't it have been a bit more worrisome to anybody except our dear Tanko Muhammad the Lord and saviour of the Supreme Court, the prophet of anti-corruption who unrepentantly and brazenly dines with the Lucifer and manufacturer of corruption at the wee of the night? He too was heavily infected by and with that social virus - desperation!

Then is Gov. Emeka Ihedioha posing alibi in this matter of desperation? Of course, he can't exonerate himself no matter how hard he tries. How did a professor of mathematics fail to calculate the primary arithmetic of division, multiplication and addition. Even as a little pupil in elementary mathematics I could exclaim to you BODMAS!

Obviously, the professor lost his mathematical skills to influence. May I not be found accusing anybody.

Our Gov. Emeka Ihedioha though a victim in 2015 of what he now wants to enjoy in 2019, is aware that though he won the majority votes cast in that election, he was yet to win statutorily as stipulated by the electoral law. He was wanting on the acquisition of the 25% of votes cast in ⅔ of the total LGAs in the state.

Yes, by our current understanding, the number of registered voters in the 388 polling units at stake can make a difference so why didn't Gov. Emeka Ihedioha allow INEC take them back to the polls for decisive finish? Indeed, desperation is the criminal and perpetrator of the confusion in Imo State which has been emboldened by the hypocrisy, ethical poverty and judicial jaundice of the Supreme Court.

Essentially, until desperation is removed from our body polity through institutional entrenchment of values, we shall have more of this reigning disarray both in the processes of leadership and in the management of the interpretive provinces.
