THE EGRETS, HERDS AND HERDSMEN. By KEMKA S. IBEJI

The egret was our friend
The herds were our friends
The herdsmen were our friends
But they were fleeting friends.

Like a company, we saw them
While the herds roamed around
Under the magical control of herders
Egrets drove our fancy
They had their job
I think a very tasking one
Taking away the pains
Of lice, flies and more

They did all at a go
We could take joy in our sight
This is our village experience
As though the schools measured time
Our dismissals were greeted by the trio
They were all our friends in an accord

The egrets gave us white finger nails
Yes we sang in plea of that
We were sure they were magnanimous
Riding on the back of the herds
As the herds moved about in freedom
The herdsmen returned our jeers
Aboki Nnama we chorused chasing them
Aboki Nyamiri they returned countlessly
We had the fun and they cheered their day

What has happened to our friends?
Once friends, now dreaded
Like Solomon's dead child
Were they changed
And by who?

When our friends hit wrong farms
We told them and they retracted
Looking like our friends now
They hit the wrong farms
We now told them but they turned and killed us
These are not our friends

Friends live in peace
Friends cheer each other
Friends play and joke
Friends don't kill friends
These are not our friends!

Their egrets can't give us white finger nails anymore
Their herds walk with enmity in their hearts
They destroy our farms
The herdsmen are now daylight killers

These egrets
These herds
These herdsmen
Are no longer our friends

We need our peace back!
Return our friends
Our children still want their white finger nails
Where is our Aboki Nnama?
Who else will call us Aboki Nyamiri?
Whoever brought us into enmity
May you find peace when you return our peace

Till our friends return
We will keep praying for peace
I'll wait here singing till you all return
Oh beautiful egrets!
Oh harmless herds!
Thou comrade herder
when again shall we play?
