AT THE CENTER STAGE OF POLITICAL APPOINTMENTS TODAY IN NIGERIA: THE YOUTH QUESTION MOUNTS. Written by KEMKA S. IBEJI
- Since the outpouring of political appointments by the Executives, from the Federal to State governments, an outcry for the position of the youths have been repeatedly heard and read. A lot of the questions are bothering on how the youths are usually abandoned after the elections. Though the hues are on appointments, but any party that won't give the youth opportunity for an elective post will never consider them for appointments.
Frankly, the vital unstated point is that except for those who are fed fat by godfathers, no reasonable, vibrant, intelligent, proficient and capable youth will contest for elective position within or through the mega political parties in Nigeria today. Of course, the structural financial demands which are critically the bane of the youth in politics will muzzle the youth.
Unfortunately, and as made possible by the situation and trend, the young people who are with them (in the mega political parties) and play their games are immature. They are either used as thugs or media touts or e-terrorists per excellence. The mature young minds are on the other side. They go to smaller political parties where there slim resources can let them sound their points no matter how far their voices go.
But in political appointments, since the youth who are with the mega parties are at a certain rung on status, they are stack of unqualified group and are never to be considered. But to have the youths on appointment lists here in Nigeria, the mega political parties must look across the road towards the smaller political parties where the crème de la crème and youth intelligentsia are found. However, a little more complexities here and there will not allow those finely groomed young leaders around the crafting desk for the appointment list. The paradox mounts.
The best for now is to grow the youth who are with them (the mega political parties) especially in terms of bringing them, first, out of poverty of both mind and matter. Or, the mega political parties should go on shopping for the young leaders from where they can be found - smaller parties.
I will not agree less with the position the youth needs a greater percentage of the empowerment package of the administrations of the mega political parties. My position therefore is that since the youths within the mega parties are politically unemployable, the mega parties should draft strong programs to get their youth wing out of poverty lines. This will grant them a population of employable youths in the years ahead. But for now, they need a holiday on shopping.
